Chinatown Chinese New Year’s Celebrations 2018
It’s that time of the year again that all Chinese Singaporeans look forward to – Chinese New Year! A festival that’s always a fun-filled occasion for friends and families to reunite and spend precious time together. Worried that you haven’t planned on how you’re going to spend your 2018 Chinese New Year? Fret not, for we have you covered.
This Chinese New Year at Kreta Ayer – Kim Seng Citizen’s Consultative Committee has organized a list of exciting activities in Chinatown for all Singaporeans. With programs such as Street Light-Up, Festive Bazaar, Nightly Stage Shows and more, you’re bound for a treat. The celebration will carry on for over a month from 26th January to 16th February 2018.

Official Light-Up and Opening Ceremony

Venue: New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Sen Street
The Official Light-Up and Opening Ceremony marks Chinatown’s opening for the Chinese New Year 2018 Celebrations. To usher in the Year of the Dog, an energetic and hi-end stage is set up so that Singaporeans can enjoy performances by local and China’s leading performing troupes. There will also be a display of firecrackers and fireworks to help liven the mood. Handmade sculpted lanterns of various shapes and sizes will also be put up to boost up the celebration atmosphere.
Street Light-Up

Chinese New Year is not the same without beautiful red lanterns lighting up the streets. So, this year there will be a display of beautiful decoration of streetlights that will be lit up for 7 weeks along the streets of Chinatown. Featuring handmade Chinese sculptured lanterns of flowers, greetings, dogs and more. With a blend of modern and traditional lights, you are bound to be mesmerized and amazed as you walk down the brightly lit streets.
Festive Street Bazaar

Let’s face it, whenever Chinese New Year is brought up, food always remains as a staple on lists. If you want to enjoy traditional Chinese cookies and treats, do pay a visit to the Street Bazaar. With a wide selection of delectable delights from many stalls in Chinatown, every moment is but a treat. Take delight in the gorgeous lights and stunning decorations as you make your way down the streets.
Chinatown Wishing Tree

Although Chinese New Year is a time for celebration; let’s not forget to reach out to those in need. This year, there will be a reach to help out the elderly, so do lend a helping hand by going to the charity event at the wishing tree. Nightly Stage Shows

Thinking of other things to do besides visiting your friends and families? Why not spend your night being entertained with performances by troupes from Singapore and China? The stage is rife with memorable moments to be savoured. Located nearby the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum, it is a popular tourist spot and gathering point for local Chinese communities.

After the warmth of a hearty reunion dinner, drop by Chinatown with your family to join the New Year countdown party. For this year, MediaCorp artistes will be singing a medley of festive songs, playing games and performing skits until the clock strikes 12. So what are you waiting for? Come and join the party!

This year’s Chinese New Year will mark its end in Chinatown with the largest float parade in Asia – The Chingay Parade. There will be street performances and up to 10 uniquely decorated floats in the parade. Drop by and end your 2018 Chinese New Year on a high note now!
